Hardware R&D Engineer

We are building the future of nanoscale imaging.

We design, manufacture and sell the world’s fastest and most intuitive atomic force microscopes. Our instruments enable scientists and engineers to make their next discoveries faster and accelerate technological progress. We have systems in over 40 countries.

(What’s AFM? Watch this YouTube short that features our technology: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xKlqsv4nCao)

We revolutionized AFM technology by making them 1,000,000x smaller than traditional instruments and offering 30x faster time-to-data.

Now we’re using our core technology to build AFMs for the semiconductor industry: delivering nanoscale measurement at unprecedented speed to enable new chip making processes with less waste.

About the role

As Hardware R&D Engineer at icspi, you will work on pushing our imaging technology to the limit.

We are looking for a resourceful, hands-on engineer with a broad skill set. You will play a critical role in developing, integrating and optimizing systems that use our unique MEMS-based AFM technology to drive industry-leading performance and capability. You are adaptable and can move between working on precision electro-mechanical systems, optics, electronics, fundamental controls R&D, MEMS, to automating data analysis with scripting.

Who you are

  • Curious and like to understand things deeply.
  • Enjoy building things and getting things to work.
  • Comfortable with rapid prototyping (3D printing, machine shop tools, laser cutting, etc.) and electrical debugging (oscilloscope, function generator, probe station, etc.)
  • Comfortable opening up mechanical CAD and electrical CAD, and understanding where improvements can be made
  •

What you'll do

  • Push systems to their limits using mechanical, electrical, software, firmware and MEMS improvements; debug issues; improve reliability
  • Gather requirements, design and iterate on precision electro-mechanical systems and sub-systems for atomic force microscopy; integrate hardware and software; collaborate with mechanical, electrical and software engineers
  • Design and conduct hands-on lab experiments end-to-end; analyze data; automate test procedures
  • Develop new ways of controlling the systems and sensors; develop new data acquisition methods

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in engineering (electrical, mechanical, nanotechnology, systems, engineering physics) or physics
  • Knowledge of electronic design
  • Knowledge of mechanical design
  • Experience with scripting and data manipulation in Python

Nice to have

  • Experience designing and building electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience with precision mechanical engineering
  • Experience with firmware, microcontrollers
  • Experience with semiconductor metrology and inspection tools
  • MEMS knowledge
  • Controls background
  • C/C++ experience
